Why study in Hiiumaa?

"School session week is the week to look forward to every month," says Markko Riitsalu, a graduate of the speciality of small-craft harbour specialist. You come across the sea, you dedicate yourself to learning and you're with other like-motivated fellow students. There will also be time to explore Hiiumaa's nature and sights.

Come and learn in the wonderful Suuremõisa Manor!

Teaching has been practiced in the Hiiu-Suuremõisa Manor for 200 years. Today, the manor's main building is home to two schools: Suuremõisa Kindergarten-Primary School and Hiiumaa Vocational School. The castle, which was commissioned by Countess Ebba Margaretha Stenbock and built in 1772, was restored in 2014-2015. Come and acquire skills in an inspiring historical setting.

Want to know how to build a house? Come and learn to be a log house builder!

During your two-year log house builder apprenticeship, you will get lots of practical training, as well as the chance to work in a company of your choice and apply for an Erasmus mobility. You will acquire skills in, among other things, timber construction, timber-framed construction and material preparation. You can take part in vocational competitions.

You'll learn in the school's spacious log shed, heated in winter by a cosy bullrunner.

Can you appreciate the old? Come and learn to be a restorer of wooden buildings!

Interested in preserving architectural heritage? Are you a trained and experienced heritage carpenter or handcrafted log house builder? Then you're just the right candidate for our 5. a level 1 timber restorer a specialist in the field of building restoration.

You can learn in the wonderful Suuremõisa Manor, but also get to know many of the best examples of restoration in Hiiumaa and on the mainland. During your year-long apprenticeship, you will learn to distinguish between conservation, restoration and repair, and you will acquire the general principles of heritage conservation. The majority of the training takes place in enterprises. This is preceded by the acquisition of the necessary knowledge and additional skills, and followed by an analysis and formalisation of the work at school. You can also apply for an Erasmus mobility!

Do you love flower arrangements? Come and become a florist!

At Hiiumaa Vocational School you can learn from experienced practitioners in your field. During the two-year florist apprenticeship you will acquire the technical skills of flower arranging, room decoration and customer service. In both years you will also work in a flower shop of your choice. You can apply for an Erasmus traineeship – we have partner florists in many parts of the world.

Together with the students, we will work on exciting media projects! An international master florist visits the school every year as a guest teacher.

The studies culminate in a professional examination as a florist.

Are you addicted to gardening? Come and become an urban gardener!

Hiiumaa Vocational School is the only vocational school in Estonia where you can study to become an urban gardener. The two-year course is truly exciting and versatile! We invite passionate experts in their field to teach. Each course culminates in a fierce collaborative project.

You can apply for an Erasmus mobility, we have international partners all over the world.

A bit of a horticulturalist, but want to build? Learn to be a landscape gardener!

You'll learn about landscaping as well as building. During your one-and-a-half year landscape gardener apprenticeship, you will acquire planting, maintenance, establishment and construction skills. You will work in a company of your choice and you can also apply for an Erasmus mobility. The learning is varied and you will learn from experienced practitioners in your field.

It's a great way to improve your skills, even if you're already working in horticulture or landscaping. You will also have the opportunity to learn more about gardening and horticulture.

Want your own harbour and a lighthouse? Come and become a small-craft harbour specialist!

You'll find your own port in life, but a year's training as a small-craft harbour specialist can become your lighthouse. It's a profession taught in Estonia only at our vocational school. You will learn how to organise a small port and acquire knowledge in the fields of business, water traffic, tourism, environmental management, maritime transport, fisheries and more. You'll do a traineeship in a port of your choice and you can also apply for an Erasmus mobility. Classes will take place in the wonderful Suuremõisa Manor as well as in different ports of Hiiumaa. At the end you will take a school exam.

Sounds good? The profession of small-craft harbour specialist is one of our most popular specialities – but there are plenty of small ports in Estonia, aren't there?

Are the wide roads calling you? Come and learn to be a truck driver!

We will open admission to the truck driver specialty in October, with studies starting in February 2025. All our courses are open to both men and women, including truck driving.

The courses will be held once a month in three- to four-day sessions. You can enjoy theory lessons in the historic Suuremõisa Manor or elsewhere in Hiiumaa, plus practical training in a transport company and driving lessons for 20 hours at agreed times either in Hiiumaa or on the mainland.

Please note: The age of the student must be at least 21 years at the start of the studies.

Want to get a high-demand occupation? Come and learn to be a bus driver!

We will open admission to the bus driver specialty in October, with studies starting in February 2025. All our courses are open to both men and women, including bus drivers.

The courses will be held once a month in three- to four-day sessions. You can enjoy theory lessons in the historic Suuremõisa Manor or elsewhere in Hiiumaa, plus practical training in a transport company and driving lessons for 30 hours at agreed times either in Hiiumaa or on the mainland.

Please note: The age of the student must be at least 24 years at the start of the studies.

This spring and autumn, new free complementary courses are starting at Hiiumaa Vocational School, where we are looking forward to welcoming people from both Hiiumaa and beyond the sea!

At the beginning of the tourist season we offer you "The Basics of Modern Tourism Service" (40 hours) and "Finnish for Service Sector – the season's crash course" (24 hours).

Digital skills and modern working techniques are complemented by "Marketing and sales of handicraft products on the Internet", "Preparing and documenting price quotations in Google Drive", "Collaborative teamwork with MS Office 365: Outlook, SharePoint (including OneDrive), Teams". A total of 17 different free training courses are starting from May to December!
